The inner driver is a jar-shaped item, that is attached to the transmission and where the driveshaft is plugged into. There are two, the one on the drivers side also contains the speedometer cable. You can follow that down to the driver.
The inner drivers are packed with grease to support the tripod bearing at the end of the driveshaft. Especially on the passenger side, near the exhaust, the grease tends to dry out, causing wear on the driver and shaft. You can crawl under the car, hold the driver and feel for play in the driveshaft. Notice there is always some play in the differential, so you have to hold the driver. Picures at townsendimports.com.
