I tend to agree that removing the taper pin is the way to go. Mis-adjusting the clamp during reinstallation can wreak havoc on your transmission, and I'd say it ain't worth it...
That said, I always buy a new taper pin kit (eeuro, thesaabsite) for cheap, and have it ready. It really sucks to destroy the pin during removal and have to wait a week for a replacement.
I've had excellent luck using some penetrating oil, a small butane torque to heat up the coupler and a good sized c-clamp to force it out. Just be sure you leave plenty of time for the penetrating oil and a good cleaning with a cloth to applying heat. :)
