The bottom primary gear and nut doesn't have much to do with how the clutch shaft is sliding back and forth in the upper primary gear.
Did you get the upper primary gear in place and the big snapring secured in the groove?
The clutch shaft is held in place by a snap ring and it sometimes takes a little tap with a hammer to make the clutch shaft move in and over the lock ring.
Did you get the pilot bearing deep enough into the flywheel?
Did you center the clutch disc to perfection before clamping down the pressure plate?
When I replace a clutch on these cars, I always shove the clutch shaft in place before clamping down the pressure plate. That way, I know it is seated and the disc is centered.
