I think what you are saying is broadly true for domestic and Japanese cars - you can either buy the parts from the dealer or you can buy the part from the "aftermarket". But for European parts I do not think this is so true. The big specialty parts suppliers like Bosch, Hella, ATE, Girling, etc. are not owned by the various automakers they sell to. You can buy a Bosch part #xyz123 in a Bosch box, or you can buy it in a Saab box. Or in many cases a BMW box, or a VW box, or a Renault box! It is the exact same part regardless, so why pay dealer markup on it? If the part number is the same, it is the same part!
