For almost 25 years, we've been driving Saabs. In 1986, I bought a brand new black 900S 3-door for my wife. She absolutely LOVED that car. When she car-pooled for soccer practice, no child was allowed to eat their orange slices or have juice boxes in the car....she made them finish their snacks outside. It was dependable, practical, well-made, Five years later, she got a 9000 and I inherited the car....I also loved it. In 2000, the car transported my kid to college. I was not concerned because he is extremely fastidious regarding car care...quite the gearhead. It was his everyday driver through college and law school, all the while keeping it spotless inside and out. Needless to say, the car was also kept up mechanically.....nothing was ever put off and all maintenance and repairs were tended to. Last week, we bought a 9-3ss Aero for my wife and I inherited her nicely tweaked 9-3SE. I told my son that I was going to sell the '86 and give him my '95 NG900. He greatly protested, relating that all Saab people remark to him at stoplights regarding the cleanliness and condition of the car, but I explained that common sense dictates a car that's 10 years newer is not a dumb idea. So, the switch was made and I told my wife that I was going to post a classified on Saabnet. She reminded me that my sister and her husband (also Saab drivers) have been inquiring for years as to when we were going to, if ever, sell the '86. She had me call my sister and shoot her a lowball price, her theory being that at least it stays in the family. Of course, my brother-in-law was at my house this morning, cash in hand. My son did not want to turn over a spare key, threatening to perform unannounced inspections of the car in their driveway, and if necessary, get it washed and then return it. We stood there this morning and watched as my brother-in-law got into the car, started it up, smiled, put the window in the closed position and turned on the ice-cold air condtioning. We spoke after he took the 2-mile ride to his house. He told me what a "sweetheart" the car was and that he and my sister were going to take it for a nice long ride tonight to get some ice cream. My wife warned them not to eat in the car!!!!
