Anders and Dean - didn't they have a musical variety show on ABC back in the 70's?

Some other questions -
Other than at idle - is there a problem? Does it run OK when you're driving along? Does it acclerate OK, and hit highway speeds with no problem?

Is this problem when the engine is cold, warm, or anytime?

How repeatable is this? Will filling the tank fix the problem all the time, and has it been going on for a few tank level cycles, or just one or two?

If the car accelerates and runs at speed with no problem, it probably isn't a fuel pump problem. It's unlikely the fuel pump can't provide enough flow at idle, but can provide the higher flow needed by acclerating and loaded conditions.

If it has happened only once or twice, then the relationship to fuel level may be coincidence. If it's repeatable, well then it's repeatable.

I'm going to guess a problem with the vapor recovery system (charcoal canister, et al). That is a designed-in vacuum leak from the fuel tank to the intake manifold. It should be buffered by the charcoal canister, but there may be an issue there. At high fuel tank levels, there isn't a lot of free air at the top of the tank. The evap system can only pull so much air in before you start to get a vacuum there, so there is basically no vacuum leak. At low tank levels, there is a lot of air in the tank, so the evap system can easily pull in a lot more air into the intake, causing a range of idle issues. I'd put a plug in the fat hose from the charcoal canister to the intake plenum. Or just slip a clip over it and pinch it off. I can't remember if a '90 900 has an electronic or pneumatic valve - if it has a thin hose to the top of the canister to the throttle body, close that off, too. If that fixes it, I'd suspect the valve.
