power steering "grabbing"

Have any of you all experienced power steering problems with yours? My 1990 900T has been getting a sort of "grabbing" feeling in the steering. It's like the power assist is not working very effectively. When making a turn, the steering will get tight like there's no assist when it is turned more than 1/4 turn...like when trying to maneuver in a driveway or parking lot. When the wheel is turned past the "hard" part, it sort of feels like the assist kicks in and starts to work, however when you want to turn the wheel back to the straight ahead position, it doesn't want to return, and must be turned back to the straight ahead position. Some days it's better or worse than others, and seems to be totally random when it occurs.
I experienced a similar problem on my chevy van, and it was because the old fluid had absorbed dirt, water and other impurities. I attempted to flush the power steering system out with all new fluid in the 900, but this did not help the issue. I have never lubricated components in the front end. I know my van has 12 grease zirks on all sorts of joints and stuff. I've never seen any info about what supposed to be lubed on these cars, and I've looked for grease zirks but have not found any...This issue also feels like a poorly lubricated joint is binding up maybe.
