And old oil turns to glue. Not that lubing is a sure fix, but if you are patient enough and careful enough and could get far enough in to reach the bearing of the motor that spins the disk, and apply some thin oil/solvent mix, and THOROUGHLY REMOVE all excess, it might be that a bad CD player would work again. Motors stick and stall on old things; CD player motors may spin fast but they don't have much starting torque.
