Turbocon:
I believe what I said in my earlier post is probably the key to most problems with old CD players - - the lube stiffens up and the motor slows down. The disk doesn't have to fail to spin, just fail to spin at correct RPM, and the player isn't dumb, it refuses to work. Then there's a reading head, that travels in and out along a thin rod. Also is lubed a tiny bit. If it fails to track properly because it didn't get to a place it was trying to when it was supposed to be there, ditto, CD won't play.
Then there's eject latch, probably sticking and failing to pop open when it gets the electrical signal to, also a lube problem.
I think the tools of the trade include Q-tips and various thin solvents, and other ways of applying tiny daubs of lube or solvent just where they're needed, like running them down a broom straw or thin wire - - definitely nothing as ham-handed as a spray nozzle on a WD 40 can. The quantities used are minuscule, and any excess makes a mess and catches dust.
It seems more likely for any failure to be in an electro-mechanical device than for it to be in an electronic component, though that could happen as well. If the latter you're probly out of luck.
That said, good luck. These things aren't really meant to be repaired but Wasyl does something, and you can try and do it too. Be careful, be all eyes as to how the thing was put together and how it comes apart, lose no screws or parts, be super clean, and be patient.
