not sure on the base boost problem, but the air box should be relatively sealed to protect the engine. not good to have air by-passsing the air filter ---> dirt in engine; bad for bearings, rings, cams, etc. An oil analysis would likely show elevated silicon. Instead of even oil lubrication thin film for longevity, dirt particles will place high scratching loads at dirt particle/concentrated pressure points.
Another good reason to check for 'false' air, aka vac or induction leaks
