Take a good look at the chain tensioner assembly. You'll see that there is a tiny captive check ball in the top of the housing which should rattle and allow oil in, via gravity, but not out. After you have the chains re-installed (with the cover still off) pour a little oil in the top of the tensioner housing and squeeze the shoes together and release repeatedly to see if the tensioner develops tension and spreads the chains. Those upper chainwheel bearings seem to trap metal like that. Thay are always full of sludge and well worn. Cheers
