Standard thing - high NOx readings. Those restrictions are very tight on cars in California these days, and Saabs have no way to deal with it. EGR handles the duty on most cars, but a Saab relies only on the catalytic converter.

Lowering the compression ratio seems to have positive effect on NOx emissions - I assume by lowering in-cylinder temperatures. I'm not sure about that scientifically, but it certainly seems to be the case anecdotally. Switching to a 2.1l head on my 1992 900Tc and my 1990 SPG had a pretty dramatic effect on each of their NOx output, so I'm following the formula on the 1980 as well... Those cars the head was part of the performance package, but if it will help the 5-door fly through the way they did, I'm all about that... :)
