The broken weld you refer to only cripples 1991 and later cars with a revised shift linkage. My convertible experienced this.
I'm betting on the motor mount. My '88 four-door has a bit of the same symptom, worse when cold, and you folks just made me realize that the mount in my car (post-transmission swap) has around 120k on it... high time for it to be changed. I did the front mount test last fall, but I think I'll pull the hood and drive around to test it again.
There's nothing like doing test drives with your hood missing. You get the craziest looks!
