It's probably the rubber "dog bone" link in the shift linkage, but be sure the fluid isn't rotten on top of that. You should be able to get fourth gear easiest of them all (it's a straight push on the shift rod), but if the transmission fluid is rotten or they've worn the synchros out or both or more, don't buy the car. Either hold the coupling together with a couple of tie wraps or hose clamps and test drive it or talk them down a few hundred dollars claiming the car has a blown transmission and then fix it when you get home for fifteen bucks. ($65 if you go for all new fluid and gaskets, highly recommended!)
