If there is a leak anywhere along the exhaust system, fumes can find their way inside the car at a number of points. One is the rubber trunk seal. Because of the design of the C900 (most cars for that matter), air swirls upward from beneath the car when driving. Many a SAAB owner knows this by how dirty the rear portion of the trunk lid becomes in wet weather. Add a rupture in the trunk seal and you invite fumes into the car from the air swirling upward.

A simple test of exhaust piping integrity is to restrict the tailpipe at idle and listen for hissing/pip-pip noise further up. I saw a smog technician do that to my car recently. He basically just put his hand against the tailpipe opening, not hard enough to block the flow entirely, but just enough to cause the engine to force the exhaust past his hand. Do this with a helper and you may find a leak that way.

A rust hole around the rear wheel wells or trunk area is also a sure way to invite fumes into the car. Also, the engine can and often does leak exhaust at the manifold and turbo pipe connections. If any of the engine compartment seals are ruptured, that's a definite point of entry for fumes. The largest seals are the steering column, the shift shaft and a wiring harness boot on the passenger side wall behind the wheel well.

The other non-exhaust possibility is you may be allergic to something inside the car such as a long used cleaning solution, seat covers, or a dirty moldy carpet.
