Slide them.
You slide the clips to either the left or right. The clip will slide over and off a raised ridge on the housing that tightens the lens and housing together - then the clip can be easily removed from the housing/lens assembly. I seem to remember for the most part I could slide mine by hand, but also remember using a screwdriver to persuade a more stubborn clip (but slide - don't pry). I imagine if you had, or fashioned, a hook type hand tool that would work well with the holes.
You are correct about prying them off. You can either chip the lens or crack/break the raised plastic tab behind the clip on the housing side. Either way its a tough part to replace anymore.
