You need them to keep your wheel covers because the spring clips lose their grip as they age and rust.
I have mastered this. You take a cable tie about 6" long. Bend it hard 90 degrees about 1 1/2" from the click end, and again three more times about 1 1/2" apart down its length, It won't hold the bends but it will stay semi-curled while you install it so won't fight so much.
Then you find a place on wheel where two holes on steel wheel about line up with two holes on the wheel cover. (They have different number of holes so you'll never find a perfect match.)
Poke the index finger of one hand into one set of holes, start the cable tie point end in the other set of holes with the other hand, and find the tip of your index finger with the tip of the cable tie. Then push the cable tie as you draw your finger back out, the cable tie will stay perched on your fingertip all the way, then just poke it thru and cinch it up and trim off excess.
Do the same thing on opposite side of wheel - - you'll never be exactly opposite but get close.
Use white cable ties and they're hard to notice.
Keep some kind of nippers in the car in case of a flat and a few spare cable ties in the trunk. Re-install them yourself after any service that means the tires have been off.
