Right hand drive? how could that be?? Sweden is a LHD country. RHD is in countries like Great Britan, Austrailia, Japan, and their territories. I HAVE to believe that the SPG/900 Aero/T16 prototypes were all LHD. There's no way Saab would make a prototype that does not follow the protocol of Sweden.

As for the production run numbers... a prototype does not need to be a 0001 or 0002. You need to remember that by this time (1984) Saab already had five years of production of the 900s under its belt. And also car manufacturers build the next model year's cars in the current model year. My 1987 900 Turbo convertible was actually had a production date in 1986. In fact it was originally SOLD in October of 1986 by the dealer!!

So as far as the 1984/85 argument.. ehh.. I am not buying it. I believe that the car was made in 1984 as a 85 model. And Saab most likely diverted early 1985 VIN production to these prototype SPG vehicles.

When I was in Sweden I had the opportunity to visit the Saab factory and museum. On the floor there were two prototypes for what would be the convertible. (They were also Pearl White in color, BTW.) I looked at the VINs on those cars and the numbers on them were not 0001 or 0002 like one might think, in fact I was surprised to learn that they were quite high in the production range. I think I have a photo of the VIN plaques so I can look it up and report back. I engaged one of the resident historians in broken English conversation and learned that Saab has a tradition of painting their prototypes this pearl white color. (There was a 99 Turbo there painted that white color too.) Anyway, the Saab guy said that the factory believed that a total of 29 White aeros were built. Which seems to jive with the math that LIFETIME was talking about if you add the 4 prototypes to the 25 special cars that were built.

In any case...this find is a real treasure!! Even if he had one of the extra 25... who cares.. it's still one of the rarest 900s out there.

But we all need to face it. The LUCKY guy (I hate him too) has got a SPG prototype. We all call it an SPG .. but we know it was originally an aero. What's really cool is this guy found one and wants to share what he knows and expand everyone's knowledge of a car we are all interested in. There is a lot of mystery surrounding these cars.

That said... LIFETIME .. if you ever sell it... Give me a call!!! LOL.. At least we know where TWO of the prototypes are now!!!
