Quick Question about timing

In the Bentley, page 211-2 fig 5 It says to "align the flywheel with the TDC mark on the eng end plate." Can I assume this is not the flywheel cover? I did this, and now I can't get the car to start. I had it a couple time but I had to turn the dis way over and she run real rough. I've pulled the valve cover back off and re-did the cams because they seemed off a little. Before I pull this whole front end apart looking for the mark, I'd like to have some idea where to look. From the picture I can't really tell where it might be? It kinda looks like it's near the starter, which is close to the flywheel cover mark. If I am on the right mark I wonder why I can't get it to start?

Second thought. I am scared out of my wits that I might have damaged the valves not having them aligned. What can I expect? New valves, prob alright, I'm screwed??

The car has been down for some time (almost 2 yrs) Since I had the head rebuilt ported the new head plus intake and ext. Also port matched everything.
