I have a '91 SPG and just completed a tranmission swap from an '89 NA that had about 100k on it (rolled the dice, bought one from a scrap yard). The new transmission has a gear noise in all gears but most noticeable in 5th. Noise only occurs when power is applied and goes away when you lift off.

It doesn't seem like pinion bearing howl. So, could this the upper chainwheel bearing?

I'm thinking that it's most likely diff preload. I didn't pull off either of the side covers but did notice that the backlash felt very tight compared to the previous gearbox.

Anyone care to weigh in? If it is backlash, can this be adjusted in situ? Besides being annoying, is this safe to leave if need be?
