Most every indy or franchisee has been in a situation like this I'm sure.
I have a very good friend who owns Valvoline Oil Change franchises. He does many thousands of cars a year, and always has a lawsuit or two going - "you changed my oil last month and now my head gasket went". Or whatever. It's all in small-claims because of the size of the claim, and small-claims is notoriously pro-consumer and anti-business.
His best defense is - "every car starts the time before it doesn't". At some point, things fail. If it happens to be at the shop, it happens to be at the shop. Sounds like there was something questionable about your car's trans a while ago.
