I would recommend that you pull the rubber boot on the shift lever away from the console, and just look down into the area where the shift lever goes into the mechanism. There are three bolts that hold the shifter in place, pull those off and the shifter can then be pulled out. There is a plastic ball on the end that fits into the gear rod. look there to see if there is anything obviously wrong. If not, then stick your fingers down there and move the gear rod around to see (feel actually) what happens when you move the rod back and forth.
You may be able to pinpoint the problem area, or at least rule out some potential issues.
