increased engine temp - simple fix?

I think I know the answer to this question, but I'll ask anyway. Now that the warmer weather has hit us is So Cal (it was 90F where I live today), I've noticed my car's temp running slightly higher than normal. More specifically, I'm noticing the temps rise under any increased load. The fan is working fine, so that's not the issue. I probably just need to replace the thermostat, right? It's going on three years since the last thermostat replacement. It's also going on three years since I replaced the original 8VT engine with a low milage 16VT engine, so 16V engine ownership is relatively new to me. Perhaps the 16V cooling system maintenance needs and parts replacement is more frequent. Any comments about 16V cooling issues?
The easy diagnosis is to just replace the thermostat and see if that solves the issue. ...hey, I just remembered I have a new clean coolant reservoir to install! Perfect opportunity. Only thing is I don't like draining the radiator cuz the drain tap is difficult to access on my car. I've got custom FMIC piping blocking part of the way. Battery removal is often easiest, but I don't like that job either. Oh sod, someone give my rear a kick and I'll be on my way.
