94 900 tc comm. would not start

Went to start my car after it had been sitting for 30 min. When I put the key in and turned it starter did not engage and the flashers started to flash. Trioed it several time with same result. Then opened the hood with ignition on and could hear a humming sould which would not go away when the key was pulled out of the ignition! To stop it I pulled the negative terminal on the battery. No hum and the car started. What is wrong. I want to fix this so it doesn't happen to the wife. Thanks for your help fellow sabbers
