if the car was running fine and then no start with flashers, i'd say you've still got an alarm hooked up (w/o horn) that's why removing the bat cable solved the problem.
Did you lock the car with the key and the windows down? i've done that a few times (unlocked car through the window) instant flashers and no start.
anyway, i'd look for an alarm system...probably up by the bat. or radiator support area and yank it out.
