Reading SaabHubby tells it can be done. The other part was just me thinking. If you have a faulty Hall sensor, but no other problems, you don't want to go into breaking the engine open on the firewall side. That's a real pain. Knowing that there are two locations for the Hall over the years, changed from distributor to crankcase around 1988 I think, I got the idea that you might pick up a distributor with the Hall sensor somewhere and plug it into the harness. I think if you take a close look at the harness going to that crankcase sensor, you'll find there's plenty there to simply peel the plastic wire open that holds it together and reroute the whole thing to the distributor. The engine doesn't care where the sensor sits, as long as it gets the signal.
I don't see any point in taking the long hard road through the harmonic balancer, oil pump etc to change the Hall sensor, with all the risks involved, if there's a shorter way.
Early 9000's have the Hall by the ditributor, there may be some other brands as well. saabHubby mentions a 97 distributor. Now how could that be?
