Had the same problem on my 90 900CT. Turned out to be the large O-ring seal below the fuel pump retaining ring. The symptoms were gas in the inner part of the retainer where the check valves and the fuel pump connectors are, and if I really filled it up, gas would leak out, pool around the fuel pump insert area, and spill down the gas tank on the center left if viewed from behind.
It's moderately difficult to replace, mostly due to getting the ring loosened. Both check valves and the pump electrical connectors need to be removed from the top of the retainer, and then using a screw driver, wood, or any suitable punch and a hammer, loosen and remove ring the ring. I replaced the O-ring and bought a new ring retainer just in case I busted the old one removing it. Replaced the O-rings on both check valves for good measure.
Hope this is helpful.
