I've got an '85 900 Turbo, 5 speed stick, with about 190K miles on it. I've had a problem for about a year now where it's been hard to start it when it's cold. I've got to turn it over, give it some gas, and then keep giving it gas once it starts until it warms up a little and then it will stay started, otherwise, if I just started it and let it idle it would die after about 20 - 30 seconds at idle. That was weird (air mass meter, something) but I could live with it. Now, I've got a more serious problem.
I was driving to lunch yesterday, I was coming to a stop light after driving for about 3 miles and the car seemed like it lurched slightly and then just died. I couldn't start it (it turned over and over but wouldn't start) like it was out of gas (which it wasn't), I pulled it off to the side of the road and later after about 20 minutes of trying to start it, I tried letting it roll down the hill a little, cranked the starter and let out the clutch while in 1st and after a few tries it started up. I was able to drive it another mile or so and came to another light and it was idling for a few minutes and then again, just flat died. This time try as a I may I couldn't get it started.
I left it there for a few hours and came back after work with a buddy. I got in. It started up just like a champ with no problems at all. I drove it to the hotel (oh, yeah, did I mention this is while I'm away on business) and we replaced the fuel filter in case that was the problem (shot in the dark, but an easy fix) and I let it idle after changing the filter, for about a half hour and it was fine, no lurching, no problems. I get in the car to drive it around the block to see if it drives ok, I got to the end of the parking lot and again, it just died and I couldn't get it started.
Sooo, I'm wondering if anyone has a thought on what this could be. I looked through my trusty Bentley manual and I've got nothing. I don't even know where to start. The kid at Subway who helped me push my car off the road (man the folks are nice down here in North Carolina) said it might be the turbo and that the lack of compression could cause issues like this, but, at the same time, he works at Subway. Any thoughts? Also, I'm in Greensboro NC and I see some great Saab mechanics here, so, if any of you post on here, let me know and I can have it towed to your shop if it's not too far. I'm off of 68 and I-40.
