It was the distributor. I built a good one out of three newer ones...& now I can use the easier to get (& cheaper) 86' on rotor.
1985 distributors have a fatter shaft than all other years & require an 85' specific rotor. Go get yourself an 86' to 88' boneyard distributor & be sure to 'gank' as much of the wiring harness as you can get...the pigtail will almost certainly be different. This is also to your advantage should you need to rebuild it (now or in the future), as I think the 85' unit also requires an 85' specific Hall shutter wheel to fit over the thicker shaft...good luck finding one.
I believe the internals of any Hall type distributor (other than 85'...but I could be wrong) are interchangable - with possible exception of LH 2.4 distributors which I don't think have a vacuum advance mechanism.
Get a spare ignition control module too...they're cheap.
Good luck!
