I think when a turbo really fails like your did, it can definitely make the huge cloud like you're talking about. I worked on a saab that was smoking just an insane amount. We pulled the turbo and found the turbo shaft flopping around inside all over the place...it was as if the bearings were gone! a large amount of oil was able to get into the exhaust side.

Maybe your shaft did the same thing but then got wedged somehow and then let oil flow into the exhaust. I dont think it takes a lot of oil to make a lot of smoke.

I'd say the first step is to replace the turbo. Also check and see if you can find any signs of a headgasket failure i.e oil and water mixed. Hopefully you only had one major failure with the turbo and not the head gasket!

with the new turbo, it may take a while to get rid of the residual oil in the exhaust tubing, so dont give up on your headgasket right away if the car keeps smoking for a while
