Dale,
If you are certain that the preload is too low here's the best thing to do. Heat the nut with a propane torch to soften the Loctite and take the nut completely off. Carefully clean the threads, shaft and nut, and re-assemble with fresh Loctite. For a rookie this job is easier with a new nut but for an experienced builder re-using a previously staked nut is not a problem. When the preload is too low you can just crank it down more but if the preload was set too high then the crush collar is crushed too much and will have to be replaced, so yours is the better of the two situations. The red Loctite complicates the assembly and preloading process but I've seen these nuts come loose without it. Forces in the gearbox seem to overcome the stakes sometimes but never if they're Loctited.
I won't presume to tell you whether your preload is too low (or high). I'd have to have the thing in my hands to go out on that limb, but you can read the book and do the check. When set up per the book these things will feel very tight to most folks.
The shim(s) that set the stack height (the one(s) between the nut and reverse mainshaft gear) are usually beat up and should be replaced and that dimension should be checked. Often a thicker or thinner than original shim pack is needed there. The shims at all other locations do not usually require changing for any reason. Good luck.
