these CV joints are very tough, and usually only need to be cleaned and regreased, so I don't agree that it's 'trashed'.
BUT having said that, the previous poster is correct. It's usually cost effective to change the half-axle. The other advantage is that this part is often warranted, including the boots, while just the boot doesn't carry a warranty. And while it's not difficult (I've done mine, on three cars, several times), it's a longer job, and higher labor charge, as said.
Get good axles, and change the whole thing.
