My daily driver is an 87 900S. Seems to me that the engine/transmission are a lot less stressed without the turbo. Granted, not as much fun to drive as my turbos, but easier to work on and very dependible. There are ways to make the 900 a bit quicker (the SD site has some ideas.) I removed the AC years ago as I never used it and installed a short shifter; otherwise it is stock. At almost 300K it's a great vehicle, gets 30-34 mpg and is fast enough for my everyday needs. (But everyone should drive a turbo, at least for a while!) I know, no help at all. If you have $3,000-$4,000 seems like you could pick up a decent Turbo.
