car died dead in rush hour and is still out there Posted by vvack0matic [Email] (#1443) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vvack0matic) on Thu, 13 Sep 2007 19:08:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
here's what happened, going all the way back to when i started noticing something was a miss.
about a month ago i found i lost my boost do to premature wast-gate opening,
i was under the assumption my plugs were in need of changing so i didn't take to much thought about it.
now for today,
after cruising 85mph for about 30 minutes with small boosting here and there i flew around a hair pin corner to fined a traffic jam on the other side,
slowed to a 5 mph crawl and after about 15 minutes, the car just died (engaged the clutch and rolled it onto the shoulder.
went through all the wires and had a can of carb. cleaner, cleaned all plug contacts and nothing looked out of place, tried to restart it and the car would just turn over and would never fire.
i thought along the line of a hall sensor, and it just so happen to be i had a custom dis, (brand new rebuilt) in the back of the car.
just how new the rebuild is on the inside i don't know,
so i marked the valve cover of where the timing is set on my old dis. and looked at the position of the rotor then pulled it.
installed the custom dis and tried to start the car.
again the motor would just turn over, never firing.
so seeing i had all the time in the world on my hands i began to think, 'this custom diss, might be trashed on the inside, seeing the rotor it had on it looked well spent. so again i reinstalled my old diss.
then played with the coil checking to see if the main plug wire had proper contact to the coil.
(sprayed carb cleaner in the coil nose) reapplied the wire then went over to the amm,
checked to make sure the wire was still in-tacked, it turned out to be fine.
now after a good 2 hours i proceeded to start the car,
it turned over for about 5 revolutions then the motor caught as if it was going to start, waited another 5 min. tried to start it and she started right up like nothing had been wrong.
went out to the motor while idling and played with every wire i could find to make the motor miss, or die... found none.
so i thought i might as well make for a safety spot (35 miles away) that has plenty of saab parts.
drove no more than 10 minutes then like before the car just died.
rolled it into a parking lot, and proceeded to the coil, banged the crap out of it with my trusty wrench and tried to start the car.
she turned over and again sounded like it was going to start but didn't,
waited another hour and a half, going through every single wire, from oxy. connection to amm, throttle sensor, aic, ecu fuse, apc, knock sensor contacts, and cleaned them with carb cleaner.
went in tried to start it and there was no change.
proceeded to take the coil off the car, with it in hand i was ready to toss it in to the trash after i dropped it a few times, but i decided to shake the hell out of it and give it a few more whacks, then i started to think...
I'm at a quarter of a tank of gas, and it could be my pre pump going out on me.
so i reinstalled the coil and went and bought a 5 gallon gas can and filled it up.
put it in the car which put the gas at about a half, tried to start it and she started right up, siting there idling, i thought it may have been the prepump or it still may be something else, so in the parking lot a put her in reverse and sped up to 20 mph, came to a stop and did a first, second, third boost in the parking lot.
car performed flawlessly,
thought how fun, so i did it again, car ran great.
sitting there idling i though well that may have been it, so i put her once more in reverse to head on my way and as soon as i gave her a little gas out of the blue she dies and did not restart.
so now I'm at a loss, if any one knows what is going on i will definitely have an ear to hear.
after conversing with a few people that now nothing about saabs they pointed to the coil in which i do agree, as of tomorrow I'm picking up a new/used coil along with another new/used dis.
if it could be something else please let me know, thanks again all for your help.
