I took my 88 spg to a shop to get the lower A-arm mounting area repaired . I have owned this car for 4.5 years and it has always started on the first try and always run well . the shop drove the car on a lift , did the work ( part of which was disconnecting the ECU ) , and when they went to take the car off the lift they could not get it started . we checked several things including the ECU harness connector . the car turned over fine , but would not start . the guy who did the frame work on the car urged me to do a rolling jump start several times . I finally had to explain to him that a rolling jump start simply turns the engine over like the starter would and since the starter was turning the engine over just fine this was unnecessary . this clued me in to this guys automotive knowledge . another worker who seemed to have pretty good knowledge of cars suspected the fuel pump had hit a " dead spot " . this did not make sense to me since the pump had never hit a dead spot in the 2000 or so times I had started it . what were the odds it would hit this dead spot the one day they had it ? as the shop owner and I checked other things the guy with the fuel pump idea figured if he thumped the bottom of the gas tank it could jar the fuel pump from its dead spot . he did this while I messed with the shifter and key and the shop owner checked the wires at the ECU . a few moments later I turned the car over and the car started . I don't know what fixed it , but the car has run fine since then . that was about 40 days ago and in the last 2 weeks or so my fuel pump has become quite a bit louder . I only had about 3 gallons of gas in the tank when the worker thumped on it ( fuel light was starting to flicker ). now I am concerned that the thumping loosened the 200k mile car's worth of junk in the bottom of the tank and the fuel pump sucked it in . I am also concerned that I may not be able to get the shop to believe they caused this since I'm not sure of it myself . the pump noise doesn't have any irregularities to it , its just louder . maybe cleaning the pre-pump filter or replacing the pre-pump would save the main pump if its going to die from the strain after a while , but I think it would be diffficult to convince the shop that something problematic had happened when there is no failure yet . this shop also got dirt in the ignition when they lifted the carpet ( still works alright ) and did some sloppy work on the frame ( left a lot of rust behind and worked over it so I can't clean it up ) though it appears to have taken care of the safety issue at the A-arm . what would you guys do in this situation ? I'm very frustrated because I already have several jobs to do on the car that I have put off due to a hurt back and I can't afford to pay someone else to do them . I plan on talking to the shop owner whom I have already informed about my opinions on the frame work . what approach should I take ? thanks in advance for responses .
