vvack,
Naaah, you can do it. The shaft seal doesn't cost much but once the old one is out you're committed. Seems like you're pretty certain that it's tranny lube and not engine lube so that narrows down the list of possible sources of the leak. None of the rear (differential) cover bolts goes through to the inside of the case so sealant is not needed on them but if they're loose the gasket could leak (or even if they're tight but the gasket is shot). There is a stud with a nut (often replaced with a bolt) next to the crank pulley that holds the tranny and engine together and it goes through to the transmission and will leak (tranny oil) if not thread sealed. The companion flange housings have an o'ring (only evident when the flange housing is pulled from the main case, and the axle seal. All 12 bolt holes (six each side) go through the case and will leak tranny oil if not thread sealed (as you know). Apart from the drain plug and the shift shaft seal there are no other places that the tranny can leak at that end (though many possible engine leak sources there). Remember that oil will blow back from a forward leak source and that this is where power steering fluid will accumulate when that system leaks. You could have a crack in the case too if it was ever wrecked or abused by a previous owner. Good luck.
