Saab 1985 900 “limping” Posted by Rob [Email] (#1828) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rob) on Mon, 22 Oct 2007 03:37:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recently noticed a slight irregularity in my 1985 Saab – a slight vibration. I thought it was maybe bad gas and made sure I was buying the best brands… no change. I had to drive about 100 miles to pick up my girlfriend, and the vibration was with me all the way. I put the clutch in on downhills and let the engine idle – it was still there and at the same frequency, so it isn’t from the engine after all. The steering wheel is perfectly calm and smooth – nothing there. As soon as she got in the car she asking why the car was “limping.” It seems to come from the back and there is a bit of drumming that is becoming more pronounced. We took turns driving in a smooth parking lot (so it wasn’t the pavement) but we could see no visible “wobble” in any of the wheels … they appeared to track straight ahead. When I got right on the ground to watch the car from behind, the left rear tire seemed to squirm a bit, but that may be my imagination. I checked the pressure and the left rear was a bit lower (25psi) than the right rear (29psi) …. but this shouldn't explain this noticeable a limp. I increased both to 35 psi and the limp was much more pronounced, and at 60mph the virbration was substantial. I had to stop and let air out (to 30psi) so I could drive home. My guess is the left rear tire has an internal structural failure…. any other guesses? I had planned to replace ALL the tires (ah, they are in my basement, actually) but I'd hate to do this if it is actually a bad wheel (no bit "hits" ever... no curbs, no potholes, they appear okay...?) and if something else is wrong, I'd want to know before running off to the tire shop - trying to avoid being VERY disappointed!!!
