I think that the car has other problems Posted by RS [Email] (#15) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RS) on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 06:32:28 In Reply to: Rough idle problem SOLVED!, Paul Bob, Mon, 29 Oct 2007 21:03:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The Retard pot is supposed to have the vacuum line taken from behind the butterfly - its purpose is to retard timing when boost starts to increase.
What you did is trade one problem for another.
It's very possible that the Retard pot on the side of the distributor has a hole in the diaphragm. You can check this by taking the hose off the nipple at the throttle body and sucking on it - if it doesn't hold vacuum, the retard pot has a hole in the diaphragm and needs to be replaced.
So, put the vacuum hose back where it's supposed to go and put a cap on the vacuum nipple that you had put it on.
If you haven't done so already, and you don't know how old the hoses are, replace all of the vacuum lines and the rubber bushings that hold the vacuum nipples. After a decade or so, rubber vacuum hoses develop all sorts of checks and cracks that can't necessarily be seen, even by flexing the hoses. I use 3.5 mm ID silicone vacuum hoses. Other people like rubber hoses, and some people like clear vinyl hoses.
