Probably the best thing you can do to make your 900 handle better is change the tires. The shocks on my '92 convertible are pretty much gone, and the convertible body has a little more flex to it than the hardtop, but with decent tires the car feels like it could autocross. (slowly) Those Michelins (I refer to them as "minivan tires") are a popular alternative, but my set reminded me of the stock tires (more mileage-tuned Michelins) that came as standard equipment on our '85 900. Wheelspin in wet weather after a year. Pretty low limits there. At least they're solidly built.
My uncle used to sell auto alignment and tire balancing equipment. The local Buick store had a few complaints that "my car doesn't buoy the same as before" and they narrowed it down to the tires. The stock Michelins on those cars have more flexible sidewalls than the other-brands they'd tried as replacements, and noticed the difference.
As for the floating yoke calipers, you can either swap the car over to 1988 and later with a junkyard car (with wheels) and a bit of patience, or do something to the rotors and pads to give them more bite. For '87, Saab tried using different pad material on the inside and outside of the caliper to shoot for more even pad wear and heat dissipation. If I remember right, they changed the inner pad to a harder semi-metallic and made the outer pads organic, or do I have those reversed?
