Had exactly the same thing happen to my 85 three weeks ago. Problem is the electrical key switch, not the key tumbler. Electrical contact between switch connections #30 (grey wire, 12 o'clock position) and #50 (red wire, 2 o'clock position) is not closing when key is turned to start position. 12 o'clock position is straight forward toward front of car. Pin #30 always has +12VDC applied to its terminal. #50 runs directly to control solenoid within motor starter. Contacts may have grease contamination or be just worn within. Switch can be taken apart for inspection and/or cleaning. I had to change mine twice. First replacement part DID NOT WORK correctly when testing prior to installation. PITA..... As others have said, take out drivers seat, remove plastic covers over shifter console. I use long nose pliers to grab one of the three wings of hold down console nuts and rotate the pliers which easily losens and removes nuts. Once cover is off you can test switch (connections are right there) prior to removing switch by flipping over the console to remove switch. Good luck....
