FYI...my car was very well taken care with all oil changes (3 ~ 4k, M1).
I had similar question last year. My indy is nothing but a Saab shop (25 years) and he advised me to simply swap out the bearings (205k) during my auto to 5-speed effort (I did the job). He STRONGLY advised NOT to touch the rings whatsoever. Since the car had 205k on it, he suggested guides and timing chain just to keep it fresh and "to kill two birds with one stone" while you're there type of repair.
We'll I swapped out the bearings, guides and chain. The effort was 100% insurance because all were in great shape. I bought my bearings on eBay which were original Saab parts, packaging and numbers. I think I got them for $50.
Remember the classic 900 have extremely durable motors. It's really personal judgement, car's history, how long do you intend to keep the car, etc...
