The first thing to check is to see if the charge warning lamp comes on on the dashboard when the key is turned on. If the lamp is burned out then it wont properly charge the battery and you have to replace the lamp. Also check that the ignition switch relay closes when the key is turned on. You should read battery voltage (12V) between ground and terminal B+ at the back of the alternator. There should also be battery voltage between terminal D+ and ground with the ignition key on. With the engine running, measure the voltage between terminal D+ and ground and then between B+ and ground. The difference should not exceed 0.7 volts. If battery voltage was present at terminal D+ and B+ but the voltage difference is not as specified then the alternator is faulty. If no faults are found up to this point you should get the alternator tested at your local parts store. They can usually test it for free on or off the car (although on the car is probably easier). With a Bosch 80amp alternator it should read 54amps at 1900rpm. You can also test the alternator at home by running the engine at 1900rpm and turning on all electrical loads such as fans, lights, and heated windows. Voltage at the battery should be approximately 12 volts or higher.
