how old is your battery? Posted by Saabu [Email] In Reply to: What will voltmeter show for bad alternator when, Per, Tue, 22 Jan 2008 17:08:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
always go for the cheapest easiest fix when working on a car in the winter. that means checking all connections are good ie battery, alt ground, alt charging light circuit (this is the thin wire going to the alternator that is not the ground).
if your battery is over 5 years old it could well be suspect. Do you have a known good battery you can temporarily swap in?
the alt replacement DIY is a delicate ballet, to be avoided at all costs. i'd say book should be 6 hours (becuase it typically takes 2-3 hours and garages' book is usually double the time it REALLY takes to do the job, so not only do they charge you $90/hour labour, but they can do two jobs in the time they are billing for one).
Wayne in Calgary (slightly jaded i guess)
