Do I really need to idle it to warm it up? Posted by Wil W [Email] (#1148) [Profile/Gallery]

To start, I've been living in MN for 10+yrs now, today it was -5 in the morning but I park in my garage and a ramp at work. I grew up in Dallas and my dad always idled the car for 3-5 mins to warm it up and this was at +/- 30 deg.
Generally I do not warm my cars up much before I drive them. When parked outside/cold I usually idle for 30-60 sec and then drive it slowly. Out of the parking ramp, I basically coast the car down the ramp, and on the streets I'm usually below 2K rpm and at most 20mph for the first couple of minutes. I figure I warm up the engine slightly first, then try to warm everything else up slowly along with the engine. Then everything is closer to operating temperature together. I don't see a good reason to get the engine all nice and warm idling and then driving it like normal when everything else is ice cold.
I see lots of people here in MN idling cars for quite a while before they gun it on the highways and side streets. BTW, in MN its illegal to idle your car with keys in it if no one is in the vehicle.
Would my approach be better than the idle for a couple of minutes and then drive?
