Generally speaking, letting the car idle for more than a minute is not a good idea. It takes an idling car MUCH longer to warm up than a conservatively driven car, and while cold the oil is cold and mixture is rich, and neither of those are good for long life of an engine. You're almost universally better off giving the car a second to get the oil pumping and then head off, staying off full throttle and keeping the revs down until the engine temp comes up. That will get the engine warmed up as quickly as possible without doing damage.
I'm not sure what happened in Jonathan's case - perhaps the throttle may have iced open - but it was more likely than not a random event and not some side effect of driving off too soon.
