Your mechanic should hook the car up to a set of fuel pressure gauges and measure the running pressure and (after 8 hours or so) the residual pressure. The only time this has happened to me on a CIS car it has been the accumulator.
Do you have strong spark all the time? It's possible this could be an ignition problem such as a failing ignition amplifier (which for me happens on the first hot day of the year) or pulse relay (for '85-'87ish) or failing hall sensor in the distributor.
When was the last time you ran through some fuel injector cleaner? Have you removed all five injectors and checked them for leakdown?
That's where I'd start- FI leaks/blockage, ignition problems, and fuel system pressures.
