Thanks - helpful suggestions. I haven't ruled out ignition related issues just yet and the 86 does have the amplifier which is prone to failure but the reason (which I neglected to mention) I suspect fuel delivery is because when cranking it is clear that fuel is moving to fewer than all four cylinders -- imagine uneven firing when one cylinder is starved of fuel - until such time pressure builds and the idle smooths out.
This not the rough starting associated with a weak ignition but low pressure. Once pressure is brought up (eg 3-5 seconds) the engine runs normally - highway, idle, deceleration etc and mpg is good (if not better with new 02 sensor) and plugs are not black which would suggest excessive fuel delivery at runnning speed. So I am ruling out for now a leak at the injectors (though I realise a proper pressure test must be done to confirm).
When started from cold - eg left to sit for more than an hour (depending on temperature) or overnight, startup is the usual high idle that you get with CIS and the drop down to normal idle.
I have heard that it is possible to lose residual pressure in the fuel distributor itself but don't understand where the fuel would go. Back via the return line? Into the WUR?
Also I don't see how the accumulator's removal would produce a drop in pressure either - UNLESS it prevents fuel from going back to the tank via the retun line. The check valve at the pump is ok.
At any rate all this will have to wait until this 30cm storm moves on and we get some milder weather. This Saab is built for snow and I have some skiing to do.
