Keeping my fingers crossed for you but...
If you find that you still have issues, have your mechanic check that the shifter coupling has the proper clearance over the steering rack. I had the same issue with one of my cars. The shifter coupling is right above the steering rack. When you shift into first or reverse the "dogbone" on the coupler rotates. (counterclockwise for first, clockwise for reverse). If the clearance is not right, either end of the dogbone hits the steering rack when you try to shift, making it tough to get into gear. Replacing the motor mounts can correct this, however, I found that the motor mount bracket (the part that connects to the motor and sits on top of the motor mount) on the passenger side of my car had become mis-shaped and was causing the problem. It probably got bent when a former owner had trouble replacing a motor mount and used a pry bar to force it on.
Your mechanic may not have experienced the problem because the car was on a lift and the suspension wasn't loaded. The weight of the car may be just enough to cause the clearance issues.
