No cars hold thier value except in the most unusual circumstances. The difference between a car that has great resale value and one that doesn't is about 15% after three years. Either way you take a bath.

It is time to change cars when it is no longer repairable (and in my opinion nothing is really unrepairable) or does not suit your needs. A 300K mile 900 has no trade-in value at all towards a new car - the dealer may give you something for it but they will just make it up with less of a discount off the new car. You could probably sell it for $500-1000 if you fix the clutch first.

I suppose really you could say that Saabs actually do hold thier value in the long run - you have 300K miles on the car, and all that is wrong with it is that it needs a clutch, which is a normal wear part, and probably only the second one the car has had. Not sure what you mean by 'shifter rod' but that is probably normal wear too.
