calculate your annual average costs since you bought the car including initial purchase price, repairs, gas and insurance. look at the yearly average and the average per mile driven excluding initial purchase price. if you can, compare the first year or so with the last year or so - is there a markable difference between the two? is the annual average excluding initial purchase at or above what it costs to own and operate a comparable used vehicle? is it increasing significantly? what is the dollar per mile average? is it reasonable?
Unfortunately in making decisions about whether to sell or hang on to a used car you cannot predict what major expenses will occur in the future - all you have is past performance measures to go on. you can of course get a better sense of what lies ahead by having the vehicle thoroughly examined for structural integrity and that will help you . since the car likely has little resale value and apart from intrinsic value most of your decision should be based on past costs.
this is independent of paying out for a new car which might be higher and might not be depending on your yearly average.
In my case what it costs to maintain an old saab is still cheaper than buying a new one or investing in a more expensive used one that has better fuel efficiency. that might change as gas prices increase....
